Silent Exchange is a continuing series of books drawn from Charlie Waite’s photographic archive, exploring some of the recurring ideas that have shaped his photography over more than four decades.
Rather than arranging the photographs by place or period, each volume brings together work from across the archive through a single theme. Familiar photographs may sit alongside those rarely seen, allowing new relationships to emerge between photographs made many years and many miles apart.
The series begins with Stillness: not simply the absence of movement, but a presence found throughout Charlie’s work - in landscape, light, space, and the relationship between elements within the frame.
Together, the books form an evolving record of a lifetime spent seeing.
Stillness
Stillness, the first volume in Silent Exchange, brings together photographs made by Charlie across many years and many places. Each reflects a moment when the elements within the frame seemed to settle into their own sense of balance - a stillness discovered through looking, composing and waiting.
