During the day, I had noticed the hotel gardener sweeping the bougainvillaea petals from the swimming pool. The brittle petals had looked beautiful.

At dawn, I took a plastic bag and scooped up petals from the ground and sprinkled them back onto the pool’s surface. Before sunrise and with a much-needed breeze to disturb the water’s surface, I made my photograph. Later, and with a chuckle, the gardener told me that he had been watching.
