Chateau Sully, France by Charlie Waite
Limited Edition Signed Landscape Print
There must be many thousands of Chateau throughout France, many sympathetically restored, many despite their age taking on an appearance of the builders having left the day before.
One of my favourites is the delicate Chateau Sully on the Sologne border and sitting on the southern edge of the formidable Loire. Sully, is the last pretty Chateau that the Loire sees before it pours itself through Orleans.
The chateau claims to be a member of the great Chateaux of the Loire but Burgundians often regard it as it as theirs.
I had seen the chateau in a light that many may call a “lovely day”; clear blue monotonous sky. Indeed it was a lovely day except for someone who needed “information” in the sky. During the night I had heard the wonderful sound of rain and wind driving against the dormer window of my hotel room. Things were looking up. The following morning, I left for Sully with the windscreen wipers panicking as they seem to when at full speed. Then began the wait; (how aptly named I am) and within three hours I found myself standing upright with clearing skies behind me. I was about to find myself in the heart of my corridor. I remember praying (a common practise) that there should be nothing to undermine my intention of producing an image with the great drama of forbidding sky beyond and a brightly lit chateau with that wonderful phenomena of a perfect reflection prevailing. My prayers were not to beg that a breeze would fail to manifest or that the light would change; I was confident of both these crucial factors. I was praying hard for the most simplest and in some ways the most facile of prayers to be answered which thankfully they were; that a duck would not choose that precise moment to descend in a skid across my immaculate mirrored water.
